Facebook Introduction

In this session we will look at the social media site Facebook–how to set up your profile; how to add friends; how to do such things as share photos, videos, and links, set up a group page, and announce events; and very importantly, how to determine privacy settings.

Blogging for Beginners

Your blog is the backbone of your online presence. In this class we’ll talk about the nature of blogging, writing on-line, and blogging pitfalls. Included will be an introduction to WordPress where you will learn how to choose a theme, make a blog post, post links, photos, and videos, and learn about widgets, tags, and categories.

All About Twitter

We will look in detail at this micro-blogging site–how to set up your profile, how to use lists, hashtags, re-tweets, mentions, direct messages, and trending topics. We will discuss Twitter etiquette, how to regard followers, and who best to follow. We will also look at some twitter tools and briefly discuss the many ways Twitter is being used. If you have a laptop you may like to bring it to this class.

Let’s look more closely at what you are communicating online, and what you may be forgetting to communicate. Learn about basic search engine optimization, writing for the web, twitter tools, Klout, and ways to build a stronger online community.

Social Media Strategies for Non-Profits

To begin creating a social media strategy, you need context. How does your organization fit into the social media landscape? Who are you needing to connect with, engage with, and in what capacity? Do you understand social media etiquette? How is your organization presenting itself on-line? How can you help your online community to understand your organization better? How can you facilitate the sharing of that information? Has your organization embraced the concept that “we” are the media? What are the ways that non-profits fund-raise online?

social media for beginners

In this class we will discuss social media, what it is, how it works, what purpose it serves, and the significant role it plays in the shifting landscape of media and commerce. We will then look at the @Victoriablogrz twitter account and how to set up and use a WordPress and Facebook account. We’ll consider how to use these and other social media such as LinkedIn and YouTube to build your online community.

This workshop is designed to get you started in creating an online presence. If you’re thinking you need a webpage, would like to blog, or are looking for a way to bring some attention to your art, business, or social cause, this workshop is for you. Get engaged with social media.
